The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a prominent honors show draws close, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
